Monarch butterfly

Welcome To

(Rose Franklin's Perennials, Spring Mills, PA)

Here at, we offer what you need to grow Monarch butterflies: (1) Monarch eggs and/or larvae (caterpillars), (2) milkweed plants for the caterpillars to feed on, and (3) easy to use, clean, and store Popup mesh cages. We also offer information on how to raise Monarchs in your home or in the classroom. Whether you're new to raising Monarchs or you've been growing them for years, you'll likely find an asset for both learning about and acquiring what you need to grow Monarchs.
To ship Monarchs across any state line, in any life stage, permission must be granted by the USDA. We've obtained permits to ship Monarch eggs, caterpillars, pupae, and adults to most of the eastern half of the U.S. Those states are listed on the 'Monarch Larvae' page. Please do not place an order if you do not live in one of the listed states.
Our milkweed plants can't be shipped across the entire U.S. either. On the 'Milkweed Plants' page, we list the states we are permitted to ship the plants to. On the FAQ page, you'll find an explanation of why we can't ship plants further than we do.
Even if you don't live in a state we are permitted to ship Monarchs and Milkweed plants to, you'll likely find a lot of valuable information about Monarchs and Milkweed on our web pages.
If you raise Monarchs, I suggest you take a look at the PDF on Raising OE-Free Monarchs. To view this file, go to the 'Raising Monarchs' page, scroll down until you see 'Raising OE-Free Monarchs, and then click on the words 'download the PDF'. You'll be presented with a 50+ page slide show that you can look through online or download to your computer. I highly recommend that you download it to your computer so you'll have it for future reference.
We hope you enjoy your visit to our web site!

During the shipping season (May thru October), our Facebook fans will receive notification of special promotions being offered on our web site. Occasionally we have an abundance of Monarch caterpillars and/or pupae and offer them at a reduced price for just a few days. Unless you check our web site every day, you might miss out on the special offers if you're not a Facebook fan and receive the posts that advertise the flash deals being offered.

Heading into retirement, this year will be the last year we do our 'Gardening for Butterflies' presentations----so it's you last chance to attend.

Butterfly Enthusiasts are cordially invited to attend

Rose Franklin's
Gardening For Butterflies

~  Saturday, Aug. 10  and  Sunday, Aug. 11 ~

Whichever day you attend, the schedule is the same:  The day begins at 11:00 AM  with a free 45-minute presentation on How To Attract Butterflies To Your Property. Participants will then be welcome to explore our butterfly gardens and  tour the butterfly nursery (where we hand rear hundreds of butterflies every summer) and butterfly flight room (where numerous species of PA native butterflies fly, nectar on flowers, and lay eggs).
In our plant nursery (which is not generally open to walk-in customers), we will be offering some hard-to-find butterfly attracting plants for your own garden, some of which will be discount priced from noon 'til 4 PM.
Plant Purchases: Cash or check only. No credit card sales.
A light complimentary lunch will be served at noon.

Please bring a lawn chair if you have one.  Please do not bring children under the age of 5.

Guests may arrive an hour early to explore the outdoor gardens.  Photography permitted.

We are located in the center of PA, about 30 minutes from State College, Bellefonte, or Milroy. For driving directions, please visit the 'About Us' page of our web site.

Please check our website the day before the scheduled dates to verify that the program is still being offered.  An unexpected emergency could cause cancellation.

Memorial Day Weekend
Friday, Saturday, & Sunday
9:00 am - 3:00 pm

While we are not generally open to walk-in customers, we are allowing gardeners to come visit, browse, and purchase plants the last weekend of May.

Here’s what you’ll find at our Open House:

~  Discounted prices on many of our plants. ~ A free gift for every adult who attends.~

~ Complimentary snacks and drink.

We'll have a special selection of perennials priced at just $3.50 each, 3 for $9.00

Although there won’t be many perennials blooming yet in our gardens, you’ll be welcome to stroll around our property and look at the many gardens which are greening up and preparing to gift us with another season of beauty and fragrance.

The prime blooming period at our place is July and August, so if you like what you see at our Open House, you might want to come visit again in July when we offer our ‘Gardening for Butterflies’ presentations. Presentation dates will be posted soon on the home page of our web site.

Driving Directions to Rose Franklin’s Perennials:

Located in central Pennsylvania, our nursery is just 30 minutes from State College, Bellefonte, or Milroy.

From Centre Hall:  at the intersection of Route 45 and Route 144, take Route 45 East (toward Millheim).  Go approximately 5 1/2 miles and turn right onto Kline Road.  Go 1 mile and turn left onto Penns Creek Road.  Go almost 2 miles and turn right onto Spruce Lane.  Our nursery will be the fourth place on the left (where Spruce Lane and Butterfly Lane intersect).

* Kline Road would be easy to miss. Look for it in the small village of Penn Hall, between the first two houses on the right.

Plant Purchases: Cash or check only. No credit card sales.

We do not publish a printed catalog.
Our inventory of both milkweed  plants and Monarch availability changes on a regular basis during the shipping season. The milkweed species we offer in May usually differs from what we offer in July, and what we offer in July is often different from what we offer in September. Once we start shipping Monarch eggs, caterpillars (larvae), and chrysalises (pupae), inventory changes on a day to day basis. Because our inventory changes from week to week, a catalog just would not work for our business. Our web site functions as our catalog.

We ship milkweed from May through October and offer two ways to order:
(1) Use our on-line shopping cart  which utilizes secure PayPal payment or  (2) Print our on-line order form, fill it out, and then mail it to us, along with your payment (personal check or money order).
Our nursery is not open to walk-in customers. All of our sales are via the web site.
We do not accept phone orders.
Before ordering from us, please be sure you live in a state that we are permitted to ship plants to (list posted above). Do not order from us if your state is not among the states we can ship to. If we are not permitted to ship to your state, we will not ship your order and will charge you a $3.00 service charge to cancel your order and return your payment.

Using our online shopping cart, these shipping charges will be added to your order at time of checkout:
Orders totaling $11.00 or less.....Shipping Charge is $6.95
Orders totaling $11.01 - $30.00.....Shipping Charge is $8.50
Orders totaling $30.01 - $50.00.....Shipping Charge is $10.
