Rose Franklin's Perennial & Butterfly Farm

Spring Mills, PA

Here at Monarchs-And-Milkweed.com we offer what you need to grow Monarch butterflies: (1) Monarch eggs and/or larvae (caterpillars), (2) milkweed plants for the caterpillars to feed on, and (3) easy to use, clean, and store Popup mesh cages. We also offer information on how to raise Monarchs in your home or in the classroom. Whether you're new to raising Monarchs or you've been growing them for years, you'll likely find Monarchs-And-Milkweed.com an asset for both learning about and acquiring what you need to grow Monarchs.
To ship Monarchs across any state line, in any life stage, permission must be granted by the USDA. We've obtained permits to ship Monarch eggs, caterpillars, pupae, and adults to most of the eastern half of the U.S. Those states are listed on the 'Monarch Larvae' page. Please do not place an order if you do not live in one of the listed states.
Our milkweed plants can't be shipped across the entire U.S. either. On the 'Milkweed Plants' page, we list the states we are permitted to ship the plants to. On the FAQ page, you'll find an explanation of why we can't ship plants further than we do.
This year we are also offering a number of butterfly nectar plants (plants that attract butterflies for nectaring) and a few hummingbird-attracting plants. You'll find these on the 'Butterfly Nectar Plants' page.
Even if you don't live in a state we are permitted to ship Monarchs and Milkweed plants to, you'll likely find a lot of valuable information about Monarchs and Milkweed on our web site.
If you raise Monarchs, I suggest you take a look at the PDF on Raising OE-Free Monarchs. To view this file, go to the 'Raising Monarchs' page, scroll down until you see 'Raising OE-Free Monarchs', and then click on the words 'download the PDF'. You'll be presented with a 50+ page slide show that you can look through online or download to your computer. I highly recommend that you download it to your computer so you'll have it for future reference.
We hope you enjoy your visit to our web site!

White Monarchs Forever Preserved in Epoxy Resin

White Monarchs aren’t actually white. They are pale peachy-gray in the areas which are typically orange. And their eyes aren’t black like those of orange Monarchs, but instead deep magenta-pink. White Monarchs are extremely rare though, one in 12 to 15 million rare!

We were extremely blessed to have white Monarchs appear here in September, 2018, among the butterflies we were raising. And understanding what a blessing that was, we raised them for over a year. Knowing we would not likely ever see a white Monarch again, we saved about 200 of them so we could one day create displays which we’d offer to other butterfly enthusiasts.

During the winter of 2022-2023 we decided how we would display the white Monarchs: in clear epoxy resin. Then we went to work. Andy, my husband who has top-notch wood-working skills, made shadow boxes while I pinned the Monarchs so they would dry with their wings spread wide open. Together we worked at pouring the epoxy into the shadow boxes and placing the Monarchs between layers of liquid resin. Sounds easy---but it wasn’t! It was actually a tedious endeavor. But we managed to get the job done and now we are ready to offer them to our customers.

Immersing real butterflies in epoxy resin is not an easy job. A lot of bubbles appear, some of which are easily removed, but also some that just cannot be removed. They are underneath the butterfly or they are too close to the butterfly's body or wings to attempt to remove them. Some bubbles don't even appear until the epoxy is almost cured and it is simply too late to make an attempt to remove them. Our epoxy-resined displays are not perfect. They all have some blemishes. Most of them look good from a distance but upon closer inspection, you see a few bubbles or a little bit of dirt (which is generally butterfly scales that came off the butterfly as the liquid plastic ran over the butterfly). To the left, I picture what is visible in most of our displays (a bubble or two and/or some dirt). Please do not place an order for one of our displays if you are not willing to accept a display with some flaws.
Our framed artwork can be hung on a wall or displayed on an easel (not included).

Aside from the artwork shown below, we also have many one-of-a-kind pieces. If you are interested in seeing those, please email me at MilkweedLady@aol.com and ask that I send you the document that pictures those. It will be sent to you via an email attachment.

Two White Monarchs (male and female) in Epoxy Resin in Shadow Box - $125.00

Now 25% off, $93.75

Pictured is a sample of two white Monarchs immersed in epoxy resin in a shadow box. The shadow box is made of wood and painted a cream-like color. This is NOT the one you will be receiving. Each one is different as monarchs are of different size, shape, and color. The butterflies aren't even positioned alike in every box; some are much more angled than others. All this means that each piece is uniquely different. Your display will be different than everyone else's, a one-of-a-kind piece of art.
Every one of these shadow boxes contains two white Monarchs though, one male and one female. In some of our pieces, the male is larger than the female. In others, the female is larger than the male.
As stated above, there are some flaws in each of the pieces, a few bubbles and/or a little dirt. Please do not expect perfection.

White monarchs are extremely rare and once ours are gone, they will be gone. We don't expect to ever see white monarchs here again. This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that we are grateful to have had--and that we are delighted to share with our customers.

We do not publish a printed catalog.
Our inventory of both milkweed  plants and Monarch availability changes on a regular basis during the shipping season. The milkweed species we offer in May usually differs from what we offer in July, and what we offer in July is often different from what we offer in September. Once we start shipping Monarch eggs, caterpillars (larvae), and chrysalises (pupae), inventory changes on a day to day basis. Because our inventory changes from week to week, a catalog just would not work for our business. Our web site functions as our catalog.

We ship milkweed from May through October and offer two ways to order:
(1) Use our on-line shopping cart  which utilizes secure PayPal payment or  (2) Print our on-line order form, fill it out, and then mail it to us, along with your payment (personal check or money order).

Our nursery is not open to walk-in customers. All of our sales are via the web site.
We do not accept phone orders.
Before ordering from us, please be sure you live in a state that we are permitted to ship plants to (list posted above). Do not order from us if your state is not among the states we can ship to. If we are not permitted to ship to your state, we will not ship your order and will charge you a $3.00 service charge to cancel your order and return your payment.
